Tree Planting
The La Mesa Watershed, Metro Manila’s main source of fresh water, is under a constant threat of contamination and destruction. The very survival of this natural reservoir was considered uncertain by environmentalists and other observers. But hope has not been lost. Thanks to Bantay Kalikasan and its reforestation campaign that started in 1999, which is the first phase of their plan for restoration of the watershed. With this, La Mesa has survived but Bantay Kalikasan still needs our help for the completion of the second phase of its rehabilitation for the La Mesa Watershed. Last July 6, 2007, as part of MEDICard’s 20th Anniversary Corporate Social Responsibility projects, the Provider Relations Department, headed by its Senior Manager, Mr. Roel J. Yumul, together with MEDICard’s EVP and Gen. Manager Luis S. Montoya and the members of the management committee answered to the call of Bantay Kalikasan in fulfilling its mission in saving La Mesa Watershed.
To carry out its mission, MEDICard volunteers, with the help of some foresters from La Mesa, successfully replanted 100 Kupang (Parkia roxburgii) trees in order to bring back the local trees into the watershed. The Kupang trees are considered as the fastest growing trees in La Mesa. Also, MEDICard donated P25, 000 for ensuring the protection and survival of the watershed.
